President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has set a new world record by holding a press conference that lasted 14 hours and 55 minutes, surpassing the previous record held by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky by 55 minutes.
The “marathon” press event took place on Saturday, May 3—World Press Freedom Day—at the President’s Office in Malé. Starting at 10:00 a.m. local time and stretching past midnight, President Muizzu responded to more than 500 questions from journalists representing nearly all registered media outlets in the Maldives.
In a display of openness and endurance, President Muizzu answered a wide range of questions, including sharp criticism and accusations from media outlets critical of his administration. Questions spanned issues such as foreign policy, military strengthening, corruption allegations, and both domestic and international matters of concern.
Notably, the President reiterated his commitment to a free and fair press environment, pledging to hold regular media briefings in the future. “My government will always support the freedom of the press,” he stated.
Addressing foreign relations, President Muizzu said his administration’s approach is rooted in a “Maldives First Policy.” He noted that any serious concerns previously raised about bilateral agreements with India had been resolved through negotiation. “The relationship is strong, and both countries have proven that we can settle our differences through dialogue,” he said.
This is the first time a Maldivian leader has held a press conference of this length, marking a significant moment for media engagement in the country.
