Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the Maldives on 25th July 2025 to attend the country’s Independence Day celebrations on 26th July. This will be Modi’s first official visit since President Dr Mohamed Muizzu took office in late 2023.

The visit is seen as highly symbolic, coming at a time when both nations are seeking to repair strained ties following the “India-Out” campaign—a movement that opposed Indian military presence in the Maldives. Many of the politicians who led that campaign now hold key positions in the current administration.

Modi last visited the Maldives in June 2019, just after his re-election. But this will be his first trip since the India-Out movement gained ground and created tensions in bilateral relations.

President Muizzu visited India in October 2024, where he met PM Modi, BJP leaders, Indian business figures, and Bollywood celebrities—signaling a possible reset in ties.

Modi’s attendance at the Independence Day celebrations is being viewed as a gesture of goodwill and an opportunity to strengthen economic cooperation and people-to-people ties, despite recent political friction.

He is expected to meet President Muizzu and senior officials, many of whom were openly critical of India just two years ago.

While official details of the visit remain undisclosed, regional analysts say the trip underlines India’s continued strategic interest in the Maldives, though the domestic political sensitivities surrounding Indian influence will make this visit one to watch closely.
