The Maldives on Friday warmly welcomed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with full ceremonial honours as he arrived in Malé for a two-day state visit at the invitation of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
Prime Minister Modi landed at Velana International Airport in the morning, where he was received by President Muizzu and senior government officials. Later, a grand ceremonial welcome was held at Republic Square, symbolising the significance of the visit during the 60th anniversary of Maldives’ independence and the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The formal ceremony began with cultural performances by students of Aminiya School, who sang and danced in welcome. A 21-gun salute was fired by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), followed by the playing of national anthems of both nations. Prime Minister Modi inspected a Guard of Honour and was introduced to key dignitaries from both the Maldivian and Indian delegations.
The visit, Modi’s first to the Maldives since assuming his third term in office, marks a renewed chapter in bilateral ties. During the trip, he is scheduled to hold official talks with President Muizzu, witness the signing of multiple MoUs and agreements, and attend the 60th Independence Day celebrations on July 26 as Guest of Honour.
