One of the pioneers of the Maldives tourism industry, Mohamed Umar Maniku — popularly known as MU Maniku — passed away this morning in Singapore while receiving treatment at Mount Elizabeth Hospital. He had been hospitalized for several days and was receiving care in the Intensive Care Unit.

MU Maniku was among the founders of Universal Enterprises Limited, a company that went on to establish some of the Maldives’ leading resorts and hospitality brands. He was also one of the first individuals to open a tourist resort in the country, playing a key role in shaping the nation’s tourism sector from its earliest days.

In recognition of his contributions, Maniku was conferred the Order of the Dignified Rule of the Muli Dynasty (ODRMD) in 2011. He also received the National Award of Recognition in 1982 and the National Award of Honor in 2002.
