In a first for the Maldives, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has achieved a milestone no other leader has reached before — visiting every single inhabited island in the country.
The President concluded this extraordinary journey on tuseday with his visit to Thulusdhoo in Kaafu Atoll, marking the completion of visits to all 187 inhabited islands and cities of the Maldives within just one year and eleven months of his administration.
The nationwide tour, which began soon after he assumed office, was part of President Muizzu’s pledge to directly engage with every community across the country. Along the way, he met with island councils, women’s development committees, and residents — listening to their concerns, identifying priorities, and ensuring swift follow-up through on-site coordination with ministers and state-owned companies accompanying him.
During these visits, the President also initiated key projects in housing, health, education, and infrastructure, and introduced new social assistance measures to support vulnerable groups. One major achievement highlighted during the tours was the expansion of Bank of Maldives ATM services to every inhabited island and the establishment of police services on all islands that previously lacked a local presence — a goal the administration has now fully met.
Beyond fulfilling a campaign promise, the President’s completion of these visits represents a shift toward a more inclusive and decentralized model of governance — one where development decisions are made through direct dialogue with the people.
With 63 islands already receiving a second visit, President Muizzu’s record-setting island tour stands as a symbol of accessibility and determination, underscoring his administration’s pledge to ensure that no island — no matter how small or remote — is left behind in the nation’s development journey.
