She walked into the clinic on the day she was meant to become a mother. Instead, it became the day her life slipped away.

Aishath Nazahath Ahmed Didi, 28, from Thamannaa in Hithadhoo, had gone to IMDC on her due date — a visit she and her family believed would end with joy. But she was running a fever, vomiting, and doctors decided an emergency C-section was necessary.

What happened next unfolded painfully fast.

Soon after the surgery, Nazahath’s condition began to spiral downward. Staff rushed to transfer her to Addu Equatorial Hospital, but sources say she had already stopped breathing before the ambulance reached its destination. Her newborn, delivered only moments earlier, now lies in critical condition, fighting for life.

Nazahath wasn’t just another patient. She was a young council officer, known among colleagues for her gentle nature, her soft smile, her willingness to help anyone who walked into her office. Today, her empty desk stands as a quiet reminder of the life she carried with such purpose.

Her death comes at a time when families across the Maldives have raised concerns about medical negligence, especially in cases involving mothers and babies. Once again, there are questions — and once again, there are no clear answers.

For now, Addu City mourns a daughter, a colleague, a mother who never got the chance to hold her child.

A life beginning and a life ending, tragically intertwined on the very same day.
