Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel has said that Maldives airspace has not been used to launch attacks against any country.

He made the remarks during a press briefing held Thursday afternoon at the President's Office by the government’s special cabinet committee formed to monitor the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

Khaleel said the Maldives will not allow its airspace to be used to carry out attacks on other nations, adding that requests seeking such permission are being blocked and will not be approved.

He also noted that the Maldives relies heavily on imports, particularly oil from the Middle East. In light of the uncertainty created by the conflict, the government is working to diversify the energy sector by exploring alternative markets and strengthening cooperation with neighbouring countries and other international partners.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu established the special cabinet committee on the first day of the Iran war to oversee developments and assess possible impacts on the Maldives. The committee is tasked with coordinating government efforts and implementing measures to minimise any economic or supply-related disruptions to the country.

The regional conflict began on 28 February 2026 following major military strikes on Iran, triggering retaliatory attacks and escalating tensions across the Middle East.
