A sweeping wave of resignations and dismissals has intensified across the Maldives, as the government moves into what appears to be a major restructuring phase following last week’s Local Council Election results.

More than 20 senior officials have now either stepped down or been removed, in a shake-up unfolding under the administration of President Mohamed Muizzu.

The most significant development came today, with the resignation of 10 Cabinet Ministers. According to the President’s Office, the ministers stepped down to allow the President to implement “positive government reforms” in line with public aspirations.

Those who resigned include Defence Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon, Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel, Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, Tourism and Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim, and Social and Family Development Minister Aishath Shiham.

Also stepping down were Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage Minister Adam Naseer Ibrahim, Agriculture and Animal Welfare Minister Maryam Mariya, Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts Minister Ibrahim Waheed, Cities, Local Government and Public Works Minister Adam Shareef Umar, and Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development Minister Ali Haidar Ahmed.

The Cabinet exits follow a series of high-level changes over recent days. On Monday, Minister for Presidential Affairs Ali Arif resigned. Earlier, Managing Director of Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Faruhath Shaheer stepped down, while Male' Water and Sewerage Company Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed also resigned.

The reshuffle began shortly after the election results. At Fenaka Corporation, Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Arif resigned, while CFO Mohamed Jihad and CHRO Mohamed Sanoon were dismissed.

Further changes saw Maldives Ports Limited Managing Director Mohamed Rishwan resign, while Agro National Corporation Managing Director Hussein Didi and Maldives Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates Mohamed Hussein Shareef were dismissed. Fenaka Managing Director Mohamed Najah was also removed.

The developments come after the ruling People's National Congress lost ground in the local polls, with sources indicating a broader push to reform state institutions.

With the pace of changes accelerating, further dismissals and restructuring measures are widely expected in the days ahead.
