As the sun set over Malé on Saturday evening, thousands gathered in grief and silence to say goodbye to a man many believed was among the bravest the Maldives had ever known.
MNDF rescue diver Sergeant First Class Mohamed Mahudhy, who lost his life during the dangerous national rescue mission to search for missing Italian divers in Vaavu Atoll, was laid to rest with full military honors at Aasahara.
Earlier, the funeral prayer at the Islamic Centre drew thousands of mourners, including President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, cabinet ministers, senior military officers, fellow soldiers, friends and ordinary citizens.
For many, this was not just the burial of a soldier.
It was the farewell of a man who spent years descending into darkness beneath the ocean surface so others could return home alive.
Mahudhy was known as one of the country’s most experienced rescue divers — fearless in dangerous waters, calm in moments of crisis, and always ready when the nation called.
Fellow divers say he never hesitated to enter depths few dared to reach.
Outside the military, he was remembered as a talented basketball player, a humble friend and a disciplined young man admired by many.
As his coffin was carried through rows of saluting soldiers, tears filled the eyes of mourners watching a national hero make his final journey.
Tonight, the Maldives mourns not only the loss of a rescue diver, but a man who dedicated his life to saving others — and in the end, gave his own life in service to his country.
