The Criminal Court has sentenced Filipino national Marvin S. Y. Vargas, now known as Yusuf, to 25 years in prison for the murder of his wife, Mary Grace Oned Pineda.
Maldivian nurse Haleemath Lamha Abdul Rahman, who was convicted as an accomplice to the intentional homicide, was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
During the hearing, state prosecutors sought a harsher punishment for Marvin, arguing that he had taken the life of the very person he had a duty to protect as her husband. Prosecutors also stressed that the crime had left the couple's child without a mother.
The prosecution made a similar request for Lamha, arguing that as a nurse, she had used her medical knowledge to facilitate the murder instead of preserving life.
The sentences come after the court found Marvin guilty of intentional homicide and Lamha guilty as an accomplice to the offence. Lamha was also convicted of unauthorized use of another person's property and carrying out an act without the required legal permission.
Mary Grace, a nurse at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), was found dead on October 19, 2021. The case attracted widespread public attention after investigators concluded that she had suffered blunt-force injuries to her head and neck and had been administered succinylcholine, a restricted anesthetic capable of causing temporary paralysis.
