The Maldives has officially launched its international bunkering services at Ihavandhipolhu, the northernmost tip of the country. This new service forms a key part of the Maldives Northern Maritime Gateway project, an initiative aimed at diversifying the economy by tapping into the maritime industry.

State Trading Organisation (STO), in partnership with global energy company Vitol, will manage the service. Vitol will supply the fuel and assist in marketing efforts. Although currently offered as an offshore service, the government has plans to develop onshore facilities for oil storage and other maritime services in the future.

At the launch event, STO Managing Director Shimad Ibrahim highlighted the project’s focus on catering to a niche market of luxury vessels passing through the area. He noted that the current plan does not include services for all vessels, focusing instead on high-value clients. In addition to bunkering, STO will offer essential maritime services such as water, food supplies, and minor repair assistance to vessels.

The initiative reflects the government’s broader efforts to strengthen the Maldives’ strategic maritime position in the Indian Ocean and expand economic opportunities beyond tourism.
