Speaker Abdul Raheem Leads Maldivian Delegation to 149th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly

Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla has departed for Geneva to represent the Maldives at the 149th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly, which is scheduled to take place from October 13 to 17, 2024. The Speaker is accompanied by a delegation of five Members of Parliament (MPs), including representatives from both the ruling party and the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

The 149th IPU Assembly will bring together parliamentarians from around the world to discuss key global issues, ranging from peace and security to sustainable development. According to the IPU agenda, the Maldivian delegation will participate in the general assembly as well as various related meetings, allowing them to engage with international lawmakers and exchange views on matters relevant to the Maldives.

This visit comes at a time of political transition in the Maldives, making the participation of both ruling and opposition MPs particularly significant for fostering dialogue and international collaboration.

The assembly will be held in Geneva, Switzerland, with discussions expected to focus on parliamentary cooperation and tackling contemporary challenges through legislative frameworks.
