Maldives Sports Awards 2024: Shaffan and Dheema Crowned Best Athletes, Young Talents and Special Olympians Recognised

The Maldives Sports Awards 2024 honored the country's top athletes, celebrating their hard work and achievements at a grand ceremony held on Thursday night. The event, organized by the Ministry of Sports, Fitness, and Recreation, recognized exceptional athletes across various disciplines.

Table Tennis player Mohamed Shaffan Ismail was crowned Sportsman of the Year, while his fellow table tennis athlete Fathimath Dheema Ali won Sportswoman of the Year. Both athletes' dedication to their sport has placed them at the pinnacle of Maldivian athletics.

In the youth categories, Akhyar Ahmed Khalid secured the title of Young Sportsman of the Year, and once again, Fathimath Dheema Ali triumphed by clinching the Young Sportswoman of the Year award. These accolades highlight the next generation of talent rising in Maldivian sports.

Several athletes were also recognized as the best in their respective sports. Hassan Shaz Mohamed was declared Pool Billiard Athlete of the Year (Male), while Deena Ahmed took home the title for Pool Billiard Athlete of the Year (Female). In handball, Mohamed Yashmu Ahmed and Fathimath Arusha were awarded Handball Athletes of the Year (Male and Female), respectively. Ahmed Rizuwan secured the title of Football Athlete of the Year (Male).

The ceremony also included special recognition awards for athletes who made exceptional contributions, including Special Olympic Athletes who were lauded for their inspiring performances. These recognitions emphasize the inclusivity and diverse talent across Maldivian sports.

The event highlighted not only individual success but also the commitment of the government to nurture and enhance the sporting field in the Maldives. Minister of Sports, Fitness, and Recreation, Abdullah Rafiu, addressed the event, outlining future plans to develop the nation’s sporting infrastructure and support athletes in their careers.

The Maldives Sports Awards, first established in 2022, continue to inspire and recognize the perseverance and passion of athletes, contributing to the growth of sports in the Maldives.
