Opposition Leader and Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) President Abdulla Shahid has issued a strong warning, stating that the opposition is actively working to topple the current government. Speaking at an MDP gathering, Shahid declared that these efforts have already begun and will not cease until their goal is achieved.

Shahid’s remarks have sparked fierce backlash, particularly from The Democrats, who accused him of attempting to label the party as a “coup plotter.” In a swift response, The Democrats highlighted Shahid’s controversial role during the 2012 transfer of power, which they allege was a coup against then-President Mohamed Nasheed’s government.

At the time, Shahid was the Speaker of Parliament and a member of the opposition. Critics argue that he was among those who hastily facilitated the swearing-in of then-Vice President Mohamed Waheed as president following Nasheed’s contested resignation. The Democrats underscored that Shahid’s current rhetoric mirrors his actions from 2012, which they claim discredits his leadership of the opposition today.

Shahid’s statement has drawn widespread criticism for suggesting the opposition’s intent to overthrow the government. Observers have expressed concern over the implications of his remarks, questioning the potential for destabilization and the historical parallels they evoke.

As tensions escalate between opposition factions and the government, Shahid and the MDP face mounting scrutiny for their approach to political rivalry. Meanwhile, government supporters have called for stability, urging all political parties to prioritize national interests over divisive rhetoric.
