One of the key figures behind the India-Out campaign, Maldives Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, is currently visiting India on an invitation from Shri Om Birla, Speaker of the Lok Sabha. His visit comes at a time when MPs aligned with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu are reportedly working to remove him from both his party and the speakership of Parliament.
Abdul Raheem played a central role in orchestrating the India-Out campaign, frequently accusing India of interfering in Maldivian domestic affairs. He also alleged that India aided Mauritius in a dispute that led to what he and his supporters claimed was a loss of Maldivian maritime territory. After assuming the role of Speaker, he broke tradition by making his first official visit to China instead of India.
His current visit to India, however, takes place amid political turbulence. President Muizzu has distanced Abdul Raheem from key ruling party activities, and several of his political appointees—including his son, former Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal—have been dismissed. Political analysts suggest this may be his last official trip as Speaker of the People’s Majlis.
While in India, Abdul Raheem is expected to meet Indian parliamentary officials. However, given his past rhetoric against India and Indians, many believe this visit is unlikely to reverse the animosity he has fostered through the India-Out campaign.
