Malé, Maldives – In a significant step toward strengthening agricultural collaboration, the Maldives and China have signed an Implementation Agreement for the Assistance Project on Coconut Tree Pest Control, marking the first official cooperation project in the agricultural sector between the two nations.
The agreement was signed during a courtesy call paid by Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Kong Xianhua on Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Dr. Maryam Mariya.
Under the agreement, China will send agricultural experts to the Maldives to provide technical training and guidance and support the establishment of a local factory to aid in coconut tree pest control. The initiative is fully supported by the Chinese Government and aims to introduce green and sustainable methods for managing coconut tree diseases and pests—critical issues that affect local growers and the Maldives' tourism-dependent environment.
"This project will help the Maldives develop an independent and sustainable pest control system, stabilize grower incomes, and protect environmental resources," the Chinese Embassy said in a statement.
Ambassador Kong emphasized the broader scope of the partnership, stating:
"Food security is of vital importance to the Maldives. China and the Maldives will continue to cooperate in agricultural security, including food security and sustainable development. I will place it at the top of my future work list."
Minister Dr. Maryam Mariya expressed gratitude for China’s continued support in agriculture and beyond. She reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to learning from China’s agricultural advancements and building a stronger, long-term partnership in the sector.
The agreement represents a milestone in Maldives-China relations, as the two countries expand cooperation beyond infrastructure and tourism into sustainable agriculture and food systems.
