The Maldives marked its National Day with a flag hoisting ceremony at Republic Square in the capital city, Male’, on Wednesday, September 4th. National Day, celebrated annually on the first of Rabi’ al-Awwal in the Islamic calendar, honors the heroic efforts of al-Sultan al-Ghaazee Muhammad Thakurufaanu al-A’uzam, who liberated the Maldives from Portuguese rule. The day serves as a reminder of the nation's resilience and the sacrifices made for its independence.

The solemn occasion continues to pay tribute to the enduring spirit of the Maldivian people in preserving their freedom.
